Tall and trim, with deep brown eyes and dark brown hair which always smells of her rich, musky perfume, Rawan Farini is one of the prettier captains in Jeyahan. Farini is followed by her slavishly devoted crew, who she has poisoned with a mind-controlling drug derived from a particular species of cuttlefish. Her ship, the Red Menace, has achieved notoriety among the merchants of the Parlanic Sea and the mamluks of Qadat. Unlike most of the other corsairs, Farini actively seeks to take prisoners. Those who submit to her charms join her crew; those who resist end up being thrown into the sea. Unknown to anyone is her growing control of the fisherfolk of the island of Beyroq. Each time she visits, she poisons a few more of the people there. Eventually, they will all become her willing servitors.
Rumors of her cruelty have led merchants to greater efforts not to be boarded by corsairs and have stirred the Caliph to offer a substantial reward for her capture. Though the corsairs of Jeyahan have a tradition of non-interference with one another, the Jeyahan Council is beginning to take an interest in Farini's affairs, since her practices have made all the corsairs' lives more difficult. The council's chief concern is that she may be engaging in some form of slave trading (an abhorrent thought to any corsair); they have no idea that Farini is subjecting people to mind control. Aside from her favorite hideouts along the coast, Farini has a fortified area atop the sandy northern elevation of the island of Beyroq.
