The Maupak of Chae, Esojen Yain, has ruled since her 8th birthday in an enlightened, progressive manner that has endeared her to both the common people of the Sultanate and to those who dwell in the towers of Surradi. A powerful thaumaturgist in her own right, Maupak Yain has gained wisdom over the years and acquired mighty technological and alchemical devices. The Maupak helps settle the squabbling between the tower-lords. She also helps fend off the acquisitive tendencies of both the Conclave and the powerful neighboring Sultanate of Naiche.
Maupak Yain is aided in all things by Wasula, a female genie. The Maupak herself freed Wasula from imprisonment, and the genie serves by choice.
Yain's court is large and varied. Each power group delegates one representative: thaumaturgists, alchemists, scientists, clergy, craftsmen, traders, and foreigners. There are many other groups and subgroups represented in the court, as well as ambassadors from other cities. Major influences include Wasula, representing the genies; Bolifo Akman, representing the craftsmen; and Nihabi Wulaan, representing all clergy. Other representatives include:
- Bishel Fayiz, representing the alchemists;
- Karche Mogai, representing the sceintists;
- Daeshwan Qut, representing the Conclave;
- Mapuket Weh, representing the thaumaturgists; and
- Tosben Alini, the representative from Izmauna.
